Invisalign is a cosmetic dental treatment that we offer to patients in Hampstead, NC. This modern dental treatment uses clear plastic aligners to straighten crooked, misaligned, or crowded teeth. Dr. Michael Weis of Seaside Family and Cosmetic Dentistry collaborates with his patients as individuals to determine the best course of treatment. He takes the dental history, budget, goals, and current concerns of each patient into account before recommending care.
Metal Braces vs. Invisalign
Clear Invisalign aligners have many benefits over traditional metal braces. Invisalign patients can easily remove their aligners to brush and floss. With metal braces, the brackets attached to the middle of each tooth are not thoroughly cleaned. After your braces are removed, there may be stains remaining on the tooth enamel. Patients with metal braces are unable to eat hard, sticky, crunchy, or chewy foods as this can damage their dental hardware. Invisalign aligners have no dietary restrictions because patients can remove them to eat or drink. Metal braces require many visits to the dentist to tighten the hardware and clean between the metal wires. During Invisalign treatment, patients do require several in-office visits but generally do not require as many appointments.
Dr. Weis will first take impressions of your teeth in our office. These dental impressions are sent to the Invisalign lab, where the aligners are crafted. Once the aligners are complete, we will ask you to return to our office to receive them. Invisalign aligners gradually and gently reposition the teeth with each new set.
Each patient is different, so your overall treatment time will vary from others. Treatment time depends on the severity of your crooked teeth as well as the number of aligners needed for treatment. After an initial consultation and examination, we will provide you with an estimated treatment time. We will also track your progress at routine visits.
Our patients may have remaining questions about Invisalign treatment, including:
What can I eat or drink while wearing Invisalign?
While you have your aligners on your teeth, do not eat or drink anything other than water. Foods and drinks can easily discolor your aligners. Remove your aligners to eat and drink, and brush your teeth before you put your aligners back on.
Is Invisalign painful?
You will experience slight pressure or discomfort on your teeth after a new pair of aligners is placed. However, this is temporary and can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication.
How does the cost of braces compare to Invisalign?
Traditional metal braces and Invisalign aligners are similar in price. Whether you pick one treatment over another, the cost will be comparable due to your specific orthodontic needs and the length of your treatment.
