No one wakes up excited to get dental X-rays. The plastic bitewings feel awkward. The little sensor pokes your gum. And somewhere in the back of your mind, you wonder: Do I actually need these every single year? That is a fair question. And at Seaside Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Hampstead, we think you deserve a straight answer.

The Short Answer: It Depends on You
There is no one-size-fits-all schedule for dental X-rays. Some patients need them every six months. Others go two or three years between sets. Why the difference? Because your mouth is unique. Here is how Dr. Francis and Dr. Fuller decide.
Patients who typically need X-rays every year:
- Anyone with a history of cavities (if you get decay often, we need to watch closely)
- People with gum disease (bone loss happens quietly)
- Smokers or tobacco users
- Patients with dry mouth from medications
Patients who can sometimes wait longer:
- Adults with no cavities for several years
- People with excellent home care and low sugar intake
- Those who come in for regular cleanings every six months
Children usually need X-rays more often than adults because their teeth and jaws are changing so quickly. A cavity that forms between two baby teeth can spread fast.
What Can Your Dentist See Without X-Rays?
A lot, actually. We can see plaque, gum inflammation, visible cavities, and signs of grinding. We can look for swelling or sores.
But we can’t see what’s happening between your teeth. Or below your gumline. Or inside a tooth that looks fine on the outside. That hidden decay is exactly where X-rays earn their keep.
The Radiation Question
Many patients worry about radiation exposure. That made sense decades ago when X-ray machines were less advanced. But today, the amount of radiation from a set of digital dental X-rays is extremely low.
Here’s some perspective:
- A full set of bitewing X-rays is about the same radiation as a short airplane flight
- It’s less than you get from a week of background environmental radiation
- It’s far less than a medical chest X-ray
We also use lead aprons and thyroid collars for extra protection. For most people, the benefit of finding a small cavity early far outweighs the tiny risk.
Why “Wait and See” Is a Gamble
A small cavity hiding between two teeth causes no pain. No one can see it. Without an X-ray, it grows for months.
By the time it hurts? That cavity has likely reached the nerve. Now instead of a simple filling, you are looking at a root canal and a crown. More time. More cost. And more discomfort. That same X-ray that costs a little might save you a lot down the road.
We Won’t Take X-Rays You Don’t Need
At Seaside Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we do not believe in “just because” X-rays.
We look at your personal history, your risk factors, and how long it has been since your last images. Then we make a recommendation. You are always welcome to ask questions or see the images yourself.
